Hi All.

After many phone calls to Renault about my uneven tyre ware on the rear of my Grande Espace and not being listened to I have decided to join this forum as other owners of renault cars are having the same issue. I have had 2 wheel alighnment checks wich shows there is a issue that is causing my tires to become bald on the outer part of the tyre and fine from the middle to the inner part of the tyre. I have read that other peole on here are having the same issue and After speaking to MIRA who will be getting back to me with some more information I feel that we should be contacting watchdog about this.
If your front tyres where having the same issue it could be fixed by adjustment.
I am trying to get enough bodies to complain about this to make a difference for us all.

I have called and spoke to Watchdog who said that we need more people to complain about this problem.

Many thanks

Has anyone had any joy with a fix to this problem
I have a 2005 espace and have this same problem, i have rang renault customer services and they said if i pay £94.00 at one of their main steelers for a wheel check they will see if there is any problem. i have read that the tolerance renault have for the rear wheels is from 1mm to 7mm which is vast, so i am reluctent to take it there for them to tell me it is in tolerance and for me to loose £94, after speaking to renault they said they were not awear of any problems !!!!!!

Hello, check for broken springs at the bottom axle mount, usually hidden by the deep plastic seat collar .... very common on the Espace IV ... and gives the type of tyre wear you have described.

Also check the beam axle, it is easily bent esp it some numpty from a well known tyre sales outfit has jacked the car up using it.

Hope it helps :)

thanks truckbusuk i have been to few tyre places and they have said it's not adjustable so i will get the springs checked & replaced and may be go the whole hogg and get the shoxs changed as-well. i'll get them to look at the beam axle too
Thanks again for the reply

Re: Espace 2007 tyre wear *** Fixed ***

Afternoon All
Think i've solved my problem, Had 2 new rear tyres fitted 1000+ miles ago, the tyre pressures that renault have stated in the handbook must be wrong as i have put an extra 8lb psi in them and there are no signs of wear at all even the little nobbly bits are still on the tyres. The tyre size on mine are 225/55/17. I would advise any one who has the same problem to give this a try

I also have this problem with my rear tyres. They wear out from outeside edge. I was also told to go to the dealer by customer services to have a 4 wheel alignment done. I have had a laser alignment done in an independent garage and was given the following print out. If anyone can make sense out of it please share your expertise. I don't want to take this problem to the dealer to spend money and be told that everything is ok and they cant see a problem. I dont really see why there should be problem as the car has only done 28000 miles in 3 years.

the specs that reno use for the rear axles are pretty much a joke.
normal range is about -2.2 +/- 7mm, camber can also be at silly angles(i dont know the specs off hand)

if the hubs are bolted on to the rear axle then you have the capability to get them shimmed with stainless steel foils to correct Camber/Toe.

prices to get this fixed is about £150 and upto 2 hours in a specialist garage (only use the ones with the BIG DIAMOND reflectors with a large red laser T bar infront of the ramp)
bog standard 2/4 wheel alignment tools are a waste of time. as you need full geometry alignment correction.

(if you cannot find anyone locally, try a JAG dealership, they WILL have the right kit)

the prices of the neccessary garage alignment laser kit is now as low as £10k so, there is bound to be someone in your area that can do the neccessary work to retrack the rear axle to 0:0 if your insistant enough.

before you get it done, make sure the rear axle and spring bushes are ok or get them replaced, as they will affect rear axle geometry.

I have owned a Grand espace 2.0dci from new april 2007, completed 51k and had to change all tyres 3 times now. The rear NS wearing very quickly on the outside after probably 8k, middle of tyre 50% and inner edge hardly any wear. I have tried replacing the Michellins with Goodyear F1 and other but little difference. Tracking alignment has not highlighted any problems with rear. Front tyres have also worn on edges with a stepped pattern. Trusted tyre shop suggested this could be due to a lot of short runs and turning into a drive. Friend with same version and having owned a number of these has suggested running fronts at 2.7bar and rear on 2.4 bar. Very expensive car for tyres if using Michellins.

I have a 55 reg 3.0dci. I first realised there was odd tyre wear when I had my G Espace in kwikfit (I know...) to have the discs and pads changed and they pointed out they rear tyre had to be replaced as it was down to the cord. This was odd I thought as I had check the middle of the tyre which was at about 5mm. I went along, looked on the ramp saw it and was amazed. I was told they can't do too much about allignment for the rear and Espaces do this anyway. Since then they have worn reasonably evenly on the back but I now run Continentals on the rear.

A month previous to this I had etyres out to replace the front tyres with Goodyear Eagle F1s at a cost of £420. Fast forward to its MOT and again despite being at 5-6mm across the middle of the tyre, the inside edge has worn through to the canvas and cord is exposed. That tyre lasted 5 months, and did LESS than 4000 miles.

The garage (non Renault) is re doing the tracking and replacing the tyre. They don't believe the tyre was defective or damaged but was down to the tracking being way out. I'll try and get some pictures tommorow.

My original message has gone - bizzare. In short my 2005 G Espace 3.0 dci is behaving exactly like Thomasg65s Espace, except the front Goodyear tyres have last less than 4000 miles/ 5 months. The inside edge is down to the canvas. The outside and middle have 5-6mil tread left. Shocking. The tyre fitter for the garage wanted the allignment doing which I agreed to and a new Goodyear is going on. I paid £420 for those front Goodyear F1s. I've got continentals on the back which are wearing well but the same thing also happened with the N/S rear (was a Goodyear again). Looks fine from when you do your daily checks but stick your right back then and it wore down to its core.

Shocking really. Potentially really really dangerous.

Just returned from Renault garage, after a 3 hr inspection, the outcome of which is that the rear axle and suspension are all fine. I was informed that the espace commonly has this type of rear tyre wear and is worse on the near side wheel, 'it's the way the car is set up'. Fortunately for me the cost of the inspection was generously picked up by Renault Uk, even though the car is out of warrantee. I will wait for the garage to send the report to renault uk and plan to follow up. As suggested by other members I will increase the rear tyre pressures and see how this effects the wear, and possibly refit the tyres from near to off-side to extend their life.

That is my problem also.
the car is a 57 plated 2.0 dci and although needing new front boots every 12k (about 12 months) the outer wear on the latest set of fronts is nothing short of a joke.

i suspect the toe and camber need correcting.

any news? how do i contct watchdog?

thanks

Stuart

if your rear axle is chewing tyres up, get it adjusted with shims.
you can either go for stainless steel foil or plastic ones.
the rear axle is adjustable as the hubs (both drum and disc versions) are bolted on. If it bolts on it can be adjusted.

the price to get them done will be about £150 for a couple of hours work and alignment checks.

you just need to find a garage that can can fit shims and do the full alignment.

the renault specs for the rear axle are pretty lax(for all models). in some cases its beyond a joke

if you can get the toe adjuested to around -1.00 ~ -2.00 and the camber balanced between and within spec them then your ok.

Renault dealerships dont tend to splash out on Sun Laser Ramps, Volvo/Jag garages probably will!

I've been rabbiting on (ad nauseam :eek:) about load ratings and tyres for G Espace 3 in another thread;

http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=131847

but the conclusion being that Renault agreed by phone to me that higher load ratings, than specified in the book, were in order.

Can I ask here what are the axle loads on the Espace 4, and what are the recommended tyres/pressures?

The set of tyres that my car came with has, simutaneously, edge wear and concavity in the middle - giving me the impression it may have suffered from simultaneous over-inflation and over-loading (viz. wrong tyre for the application).

Chaps,

We've done about 35000 miles in our Espace now and like you I've noticed it wears its tyres quite badly on the outside edges, front and rear.

Just had a ful set of Falken HS 439 Eurowinters fitted (very good tyres for this car) and had the geo checked at the same time.

Attached are the adjusted values it came back with.

What do you think?

Cheers

Yves

get cam bolts fitted to the front hubs (to correct camber)and have the rear axle stubs fitted with shims to correct both toe and camber. (you need about 1-2mm toe in there)

you have a thrust angle on the rear axle, which means you must have the car always aligned on x4 wheel laser ramps to correct else you will have a wonky steering wheel.

they should ignore the manufacture recommended settings as they are too lax (someone (at reno R&D)coundnt be bothered to actually spend money on having them with tighter tollerances as that would mean almost all models would rack up a lot of remidial work to correct (what i would consider shoddy parts))

you shouldnt have to replace tyres every 5-8k, many other manufacturers and models can do up to 30k miles on one set !!!

on my old lag1 i did around 30k miles on one set of tyres 2003-2005.

Definately going to have this done, sooner rather than later.

Good spot, the wheel is drooping noticably to the right currently.

The old Girl is not too bad on overall tyre wear, I rotate them at about 15k and that way manage to squeeze 20 -22k out of a single pair.

Cheers and Happy Christmas to All

I think I know why the rear tire is wearing out form outer edge especially the left hand side . I had a puncture today . When I took the wheel off I noticed the bottom part of the coil spring is broken. And the broken bit is very rusty and sitting tight in the shoe . From the look of it . It must have been broken for a long time. The question is, should I change the other side too or just the broken spring. The other spring looks intact.

always replace suspension parts in axle pairs where-ever possible.

so yes replace both springs and also get the rubber bushes that they sit in on top replaced(they are only about £12 the pair i belive) and will prevent any odd knocking noises.

the old ones should also have a plastic sleeve on thebottom end of the spring, make sure you get this taken off the old spring and fitted to the new one, its there to prevent sqeeking and creaking noises when they compress and try to twist on the hub/axle-spring carrier.

I have had exactly the same problem with rear springs broken at the bottom. Renault UK paid a proportion to replace.
Alos having aproblem with rear tyres wearing on outer edges. At £150 + Michelins are expensive to wear so quickly. Dealer and independant say there is no adjustment, and so it must be as per originally intended.
Not too sure what we can achieve. But read good post on similar issue with Clios.
