Megane 1.6 Cam Belt Change

Being an old school ex mechanic and getting on a bit now. I was wondering how difficult it actually is to change the cam belt? Are there any step by step guides on here ? OR Is there a resident expert on here that can do the job at reasonable rates. Not having any keys on the pulleys, or timing marks and special locking tools worries me slightly. I live in s.e. wales and I am a new member on here.

Re: Megane 1.6 Cam Belt Change

Hello and welcome to the forum to the forum

To time the camshafts you will need to remove the 2 blanking plugs on the gearbox end of the cylinder head. You will have prize them out. Rotate the engine until the 2 offset slots in the ends of the cam shafts are below the centre line of the upper and lower cylinder head and insert the timing tool.

There is a blanking bolt to the right of the dipstick which you remove to insert the TDC setting pin.

You shouldn***8217;t need to undo the cam shaft sprockets if replacing the belt. It***8217;s best to buy a complete belt kit with tensioner and guide roller as the rollers can also fail. You should get 2 new blanking plugs with the kit. It might also be worth changing the water pump at the same time as this is also driven by the timing belt.

You will have to remove the drivers side engine mounting and jack the engine up and down.

Recycled is your man

Not sure what it's like on the 2005 cars, but access was a bit fiddly doing my 2001 model.

It's pretty straightforward once you get your head round the 'keyless' pulleys. Don't cut corners, use a new crankshaft pulley bolt and remember to manually turn the engine over when setting the belt tension.

Renault recommend renewing the serpentine (alternator etc) belt whenever it is removed.

Re: Megane 1.6 Cam Belt Change

Thanks guys. So the cam locking tool just fits on the rear of the shafts to lock them does it? Only I saw one post somewhere with a larger tool locking the front sprockets too? This I believe was on a 172 Clio Sport.

Yes thats right here is a home made tool being used. The cam locking tool will fit 1.4 K4J, 1.6 K4M,1.8 F4P & 2.0 F4R 16 valve engines.

The cam shaft sprocket locking tool you refer to is for undoing the cam shaft sprockets which you shouldn't need to do if just changing the timing belt. The cam shaft sprockets do have to be removed to be able to remove the upper cylinder head / rocker cover.
