Question Aux Drive Belt Changing

Having a spot of bother changing the Aux Drive Belt and Tensioner on a 1998 Scenic 2.0 (F3R 796 engine +PAS+AC).
I can't see (a) how to release the belt tension, and (b) how the actual tensioner works.
My Haynes manual is not very helpful and has no pictures or diagrams for my particular engine model.
The new tensioner has a toothed gear on one side and comes with a new Allen Key bolt.
Can anyone enlighten me on how I change the tensioner and belt.
Thanks

Victor

Re: Aux Drive Belt Changing

Hi Victic,
I don't know the F3R but on the F4R espace you have to put a ring spanner on the idler pulley and pull towards you. This releases the belt tension and you can put a alan key through the bracket at the front to hold in position. Look at your new tensioner and check the spring is in tension. If it is nly release when new tensioner and belt are fitted. I am sure somebody with a scenic will come along soon and tell you the official method. Good luck pj52

Re: Aux Drive Belt Changing

The auxiliary belt tensioner on the 2.0 16 valve F4R fitted in the later MK1 Scenic is released in the same way as pjl 52 describes for the Espace a cranked ring spanner on the tensioner wheel center nut and rotate clockwise and lock in position as he says.

I would think it must be a similar procedure for the 2.0 8 valve F3R though I think access might not be as easy as I belive the alternator is at the back of the engine?

Re: Aux Drive Belt Changing

I Have a similar age 2.0 F3R scenic not auto and no air con and the auxilary belt is tensioned by the alternator, loosening 2 nuts and adjusting with a adjusting screw. there is no other tensioner on the aux belt. Is your alternator in front of the engine like mine? (I think mine is F3R 750)
