Angry Renault Scenic 1

Hi all, Itís my first post so please be gentle, I need your help please, I have a 1998 (R) scenic 1 1.6, 8v, K7M engine, when i got the car last may there was a light on the dash which stayed on ( orange with a wiggly line ) after looking through other threads on this great forum it ended up being the vacuum pipe from the map sensor to manifold had come off, job sorted, a big thank you for that, then about 3 weeks ago the light come on again & the car was not running right, checked vacuum pipe, it had a split in it so i taped it up, cars been running ok since but the light is still on, as I have been getting it ready for its MOT i checked the spark plugs & they are all black, not oily but sooty? Iím worried it will fail its emissions test, hoping someone can point me in the right direction, if anyone can help me please, many thanks in advance,
P.S. sorry for going on & on & on.

Re: Renault Scenic 1

Hi there Steve, and welcome.

Glad to hear the forum has been of help before.

It does look as though the engine has been running rich (probably to compensate for the false data created by the pipe issues).

I guess there are 2 issues (plugs & catalyst); I'd suggest the following-
  1. remove the spak plugs and leave to soak in a little petrol or paraffin, then clean with a wire brush, dry & re-install (this will dissolve the soot).
  2. use tome Cataclean as directed.
  3. give the car a good blast up the motorway.
I don't know if that will remove the light (that may need re-setting), but it should optimise the system for the emissions part of the test.

Another tip is to get the engine fully up to temp on the day of the test, so that the choke isn't operating to corrupt the results.

HTH

Paul

Re: Renault Scenic 1

Changing the oil & filter won't clear any lights, but if it is due, it will do absolutely no harm at all.

Best of luck,

Paul
