"Air Bag Off" warning on Laguna

Hi

I have just progressed to my 5th Laguna (am I normal?!?!) - a 56 plate 2.0 Privilege

On the dash there is a warning light which flashes on briefly stating "Air Bag Off"

From the manual I think this means the passenger air bag has been manually disabled - presumably from the switch in the end of the dash by the door hinge?... but changing the switch doesnt appear to make any difference

Have I read the manual correctly or is it just a warning to make you think in case you want to turn it off (carrying a child seat etc)?

I am assuming its a fault I need to get looked at? If so is there anything you experts can suggest I check

Thanks as always in anticipation

Regards
Simon

Re: "Air Bag Off" warning on Laguna

Wow, somebody who's had more Lagunas than me!

It's definitely supposed to go off if the switch is in the off position, I'd check that the switch is working properly and check the continuity of the wiring with a multimeter (obviously, disconnect the battery for ~10 minutes before touching anything connected to the airbag computer Or better still, disarm the system with CLIP if you can)

I haven't had one with the option to disable the passenger airbag yet, I think that came about in 2002/3. Can't see myself needing to put a child seat in the front of my car so it's one less thing to go wrong

Re: "Air Bag Off" warning on Laguna

Well, I have an expert VW mechanic who reckons this is caused by a short in the heated driver's seat of my MII 1.9dCi Laguna 2003! When they put seats in they plug in connections and these work loose after manufacture. Thus lighting up fault. So disconnect car battery [ otherwide all sorts gets upset] and solder wires togther to prevent continuing fault. I will let you know if this works! Oh, my wife moves the seat further forward and guess what comes on! The air bag fault light. [It didn't help that she kept saying it was the seat belt light!]
