gearbox problem on automatic Renault Megane 1.6

Hi, I have an automatic Megaine 1.6. I was driving on the motorway yesterday at about 70mph when there was a big clunk, the car dropped speed and the revs increased. The 'check gearbox' light came on on the dash. I took it to my local garage who ran a diagnostics and said it looked fine and they couldn't find a problem. Today I drove home on the motorway and the same thing happened again - scary! Does anyone know what the problem could be? I don't want to take it to somewhere and pay again for them not to know what the problem is :-( Thanks.

Re: gearbox problem on automatic Renault Megane 1.6

Hello,

how old is your Megane? The DPO torque converter auto boxes a known fault with them is that the EVM solonoid valve or pressure regulation sensor can fail and it does sound like either one of those. Your best bet would be to take your Megane to an automatic transmission specialists. Some are members of FATE, which is Federation Of Automatic Transmission Engineers.

Harry.

I don't have a garage just a driveway. The Modus 1.6 16v VVT Dynamique Auto is my Grandparents car which I also drive.

Re: gearbox problem on automatic Renault Megane 1.6

Hi Harry, thanks for your post. The Megane is 2006. I've taken it to an automatic gearbox specialist (not a member of FATE as I couldn't find one near us unfortunately). He's said there's a problem and he'll have to take the gearbox out to fix it and possibly recondition it too, though he doesn't know yet. He's quoted between 600-1,300 plus VAT! I reckon the car is only worth about 2,500 (3K at the most) so now don't know what to do. I just wondered if this sounded a lot of money to other people too?

NO NO NO NO. Do not let him take the gearbox out!!!!!
The problem is most definately the EVM valve which is readily available and certainly not 1300 worth of repair....Hell at them prices you will more than definately be better off taking it to your Renault dealer and getting a proper diagnosis and repair which will in no way result in the gearbox being removed!!!

Thanks - we told him not to go ahead with anything and collected the car (no charge) as thought something wasn't right at that price! Will contact Renault as you suggest as hopefully they'll know what needs doing.
