Question Crankshaft Pulley....

My Megane got hungry and decided to eat the drive belt, alot of it is caught up behind the Crank pulley for the drive belt.. Can I take the crank pulley off without messing up the timing or do i risk messing up the timing taking the bolt out to remove that pulley? I was warned that if i go on ahead and remove that bolt it may mess up the timing but was hoping somone could help me please?

baring in mind i do not plan on touching the timing belt!

Re: Crankshaft Pulley....

I locked the crankshaft with a small torx bit wedged the flywheel and bell housing (easily accessible from under the car). Undo the pulley bolt (which should be very tight) and try to remove the pulley. It is a push fit - there is no woodruff key - and you may need a "suitable" puller. Provided that you do not try to rotate the crankshaft and camshaft the timing will not be affected.

Re: Crankshaft Pulley....

I've had the same problem with my Megane except instead of eating the belt the pulley damper itself was worn so that there was a distinct knoocking sound when the engine was ticking over. I removed the pulley yesterday and have found there are a number available over the net.
I'm virtually certain I didn't move the engine since removing the pulley so I'm assuming I can just put a new pulley on without worrying about timing? Just don't want to make a "minor" job develop into a major one!
Is there anyone out there who can reassure me please?

Re: Crankshaft Pulley....

When you have replaced the pulley, turn the engine over by hand for a couple of revolutions to ensure there is no valve to piston contact.
