Megane cambelt special tool

Hello everybody.

I'm new to the forum, although I've already read many many posts in the last few days. I'm looking to replace a cambelt on a 2000 Renault Megane 1.6. The car's only got 40k miles but it is 7 years old. Problem is, three garages told me this car needs a special tool for this work, which they didn't have. Does anybody know of a garage in the Oxford area that would do this well and for a reasonable price? The Renault dealer is asking for £525.

cheers.

Hi,
I do not know if this will help, but I can tell you where you can buy the tool that they are on about.I do not advise you to do the job yourself, but if you know somebody who can, it may work out cheaper in the long run.Anyway(Justoffbase) is the web site they sell tools online, The tool does quite a few Renault engines petrol and diesel.I hope this helps?

useful info

Hi Alan,

thanks for the reply. It's good to know which tool they are referring to, just to make sure the garage that takes the job on know and own this tool. One of the mechanics I spoke to said he actually replaced a cambelt on a Megane without it, and almost got himself in a lot of trouble. I think I'm just going to trust the garage down the road. They claim to have changed a cambelt on cars like mine before and they are ~200 pounds cheaper than the official dealers. Can't think of anything else to do really.

cheers
