Immobiliser and the 4 digit code.

I'm new to the forum and a recent Kangoo owner. I picked up a very low milage ( 11K) 51 plate RXE 1.4 which I really love, its a great vehicle.

I have 2 single button remote keys that came with the vehicle. One does central locking & engine, but the second will only open the doors & does not start the engine.
I am concerned about having a single key, and so I would ideally like both keys to work.

My local dealer says the normal thing - approx 45 to re program the key or 130 to replace it.

I have done a little research.
Apparently there was a four digit code supplied with the vehicle when new. (Not the radio code but another) I do not have this code, but I asked and Renault can supply me the code via the dealer for 15.00. on production of the V5 and proof of ownership of my vehicle

They tell me this would need to be entered every time I start the vehicle.
My question is .....
is this true?

(If so it would seem fine to me as a solution to starting the vehicle and getting it home in an emergency or say on holiday in Europe etc.)

So can anybody please tell me by what process / how / into where I would enter this 4 digit code after I had bought it.

It would seem to me to be an economical solution to a spare key crisis.
i.e. for those people with only a single key or a problem key. You could have a backup plan.

Am I right in assuming that this 4 digit pin provided with the vehicle is an overide code for the immobiliser?
If so then for other people with only on key it might be a good backup plan.

i.e. - the plan ..........
1.Buy a used key off a scrappy or ebay.
2.Buy a blank key blade for 2/3 off ebay.
3.Have the new blade cut to your key, and fit the new blade to the secondhand scrappy / ebay key handle.
4. Now we have a mechanical device that will manually and mechanically open the car and operate the starter switch.
5.Enter the 4 digit pin and you can at least get going / get home / go to the dealer for a new key, without a real breach in vehicle security

Am I correct in my thinking or is there an obvious problem.

It says in the Kangoo drivers manual that only two keys can be programmed to the vehicle.
Is this also true.

Failing all of that I also discovered this during my research

Take a look - this is a company in Stoke on Trent
They will reprogramme ECUs to remove the immobiliser feature or have developed and sell an immobilser overide unit that will take away the Renault factory immobiser feature from the vehicle. The cost - similar to that of a new key 86 + vat.

or if you live in, or around Northamptonshire like me. Then this independent auto lock specialist might be of use.

immobs are a minefield and renault change the systems.

i believe with your 51 plate yes you would have to enter the code everytime you start.

immob question; you will need to check what system you have fitted, on my 54 plate kangoo with 2 button RF keyfob the system works more or less as follows:

2 keys are 'blown' with the code that is already programmed onto the vehicle computer. the keys cannot be 'blown' or programmed again.

having only had one key with mine i bought a used same type of keyfob from ebay, changed the key blade and obtained an new unprogrammed chip and replaced the blown one on the keyfob circuit. I will still have to take it to renault to get it programmed to match the code in the UCH though.

hope that gives you the idea of the potential probs and it does depend what system you have fitted, i used to have a 51 plate kangoo with only 1 button to lock unlock and this was a different system entirely. like yours i could enter the 4 digit code but this facility is not available with the newer system....probably to make you buy the spare key at 170!!
