Renault Scenic 1.6 16V high temp gauge

Hi.I am new to this so bear with me please.I have a 2000 Renault Scenic 1.6 16V that has a high reading on its temp gauge. When the car is started the gauge goes to the 1/4 to setting and after a mile it is almost at the 11 o'clock position. The cars performance isn't affected in any way apart from the fan that always seems to stay on, regardless of the length of journey, when the car has stopped. It doesn't seem to lose any water either.I'm not loaded with money so i'm reluctant to take it to the garage until i have a better idea of what the possible faults are.Do they charge for diagnosing a problem.Any help would be appreciated.Regards,Jim.

Have got a similar problem with my 1.6 16v coupe, guage moves around as I drive but engine seems cool. It's been suggested that it could be a fault with the wiring loom as have had temp sensors replaced already (by usual garage who is now stumped by it). Currently trying to decide whether or not to spend the £200 to have it done as money is tight, garage (that specialises in electrics) I took it to didn't charge to diagnose which surprised me as local Renault dealership quoted 1 hours labour to look at it (£60)
