Adjustment of Valve Clearances

Hi Guys

As posted elsewhere, my Laguna RXE has been for its 140'000km service recently. I asked the authorised Renault service establishment to also change the cam belt, which was done.

When I delivered the car to them, I specifically asked them if valve clearances are re-set and I pointed out to them that I could hear "clickety-clack" from the valves - especially when the car was hot and idling.

The service reception was evasive about this question and I never got a straight answer and my car was delivered with exactly the same (what I assume to be) excessive valve noise.

I checked all the service data in my handbook and the service manual but could find no reference as to IF, OR and WHEN valve clearances are supposed to be reset to the applicable spec for my car.

I then made contact with Renault South Africa and asked the same question about the need to re-set valve clearances.

I got a quick reply from their Customer Relations Department to the effect that 'no valve clearance adjustment is necessary on an RXE'.

Well, I'm still uneasy about this reply. I've been driving all kinds of Renault cars for almost 40 years and always did my own service, including cambelt changes and valve clearance adjustment on my cars.

What makes the Laguna so special that it can do without periodic valve clearance adjustment?

Is this statement (which I have by email) true or false?

Happy weekend

Valve clearance

There were 3 types of 2litre engines in Laguna 1 phase 2. F3R 8 valve 2 litre,F4R 16 valve 2 litre, or the N7Q 16 valve 2 litre (Volvo engine). If your car is Auto it may well have a F3R in it and yes these valves are adjustable by replacing the buckets/ or shims in the buckets. If it is a 16 valve they are all hydraulic (not adjustable).
Hope this helps.
