Vel Satis Towing Questions

Hi, I have had a 2003 Vel Satis 2.2dci Privalige(Manual) for nearly two years and love the car, its absolutely brilliant. The wife has insisted we buy another caravan for holidays to Spain and southern europe. I purchased a caravan with a max weight of 1400kg this is 200kg below the cars max and well below the 85% recomendation.
My problem is that the car wallows like a sick pig! Tyre pressures on van and car are correct and the nose weight also correct at 50lb. The issue seems to be a very soft rear end of the car causing it to pitch and wallow. I have adjusted the friction damper that clamps onto the Towbar to try and reduce the effects but the car needs either new shock absorbers or new springs. If so which? Also I dont want to waste money on OE parts if they are too soft for towing, but on the other hand I dont want my fillings vibrated out either!
Has anyone any good advice and to keep costs reasonable too.
The car has done 48k miles. Im not too keen on those rubber Spring Assisters as I dont think that will help as the suspension is not bottoming out, just wallowing and pitching making it feel like we are going to be sea/travel sick!!

Also, would the 3ltr Vel Satis Auto be a better tow car for those long journeys and what would the likely mpg be from a 3Ltrdci Vel Satis be(approx) Should I consider a SWAP or PX for the 3Ltr dci????

Thanks to everyone for your help and assistance, its greatly appreciated. Jon S......
