Fuel Guage Calibration

My fuel gauge seems to have lost the will to be accurate. I know the tank capacity is 60L on my car but the light is coming on at 49litres (Gauged by filling up and running down) and the needle hits the bottom at around 54litres. I would rather the light/tone came on around a more sensible 54-55 litres as due to the stress of driving with a light on I tend to fill up.

Any thoughts to get it more accurate?

I have done a mode test which does seem to bring the needls in line a little more but once I fill up again it goes back to the pessimist.

The Trip computer is pretty rubbish, I know that now, shows me taking 15.5+ gallons out of the tank which is an impossibility.

The annoying thing is, it all used to work perfectly until I had a new engine put in then its just given up the ghost.

Can anybody help?

I know the trip computers in general are rubbish as I have said but it used to be fine. And I know of the Mode test to do a quick recalibration. I also know as somebody suggested about parking on a hill and 'cheating' the gauge on the mode test. This works, until you fill up again.

I also know I have spelt 'Gauge' wrong in the title. And will live with the shame.

Thanks in advance

Re: Fuel Guage Calibration

As the fuel trip meter seems to be miles of the mark it well could be the fuel tank sender or its electrical conections are faulty. So it may be worth checking the tank unit - usually accessable via an inspection cover under the rear seat.
