No, you won't then be able to select reverse.
There must be a part of the gearknob which is in line with the lever and doesn't move in order to help select a gear - drill a small hole through that, and screw a self-tapper through that.
Tiger Seal can be found online, or from independent car accessory shops. Its better than silicone as it is very strong, yet doesn't become brittle once it fully cures, so it shouldn't start wearing away with every gearchange.
The principle of the self-tapper is similar to the aftermarket gearknobs which tighten using a grub screw tightened by an allen-key (or hex key).
