Intermittent Starting problems - Renault Megane 1.6 (2006 Model)

I have a strange starting problems with my Renault Megane 1.6. After driving for about +/- 30 to 45 minutes and if stuck if traffic (not moving) all the time - the vehicle switches off. I try starting it again and can hear the engine spin, but it fails to starts.

If I leave the car off for about 20 minutes, it starts again. I have taken it to Renault who indicate that the following needs to be changed:

1. TDC and loom
2. Crankshaft sensor
3. Map sensor

It costs a lot to have all these replaced and I am not even sure it might fix the issue. Renault could not pin-point the exact fault but informed me that the above sensors needs to be replaced.

I have read on the forum that the TDC can be cleaned and put back on. Would this be a viable option on an 2006 Megane or should I look else where for the issue? What else could be other possible faults?

Many thanks,

It,s very unlikely to be the TDC Sensor and Renault should know that !

A dirty TDC sensor only needs cleaning not a 100 pound bill for a new one and the loom, it is an easy job to clean it, the TDC only seems to cause bad starting, once it,s running there is no problem.

Thumbs up Re: Intermittent Starting problems - Renault Megane 1.6 (2006 Model)

Try the crankshaft sensor very common fault on renaults, when it gets hot looses magnitism so the signal becomes weak however this will not show on diagnostics as it still produces a signal, have changed loads of these on clio and megs, very easy to change, located just above flywheel you need 10mill socket to remove

Re: Intermittent Starting problems - Renault Megane 1.6 (2006 Model)

Hi there,

I been to the Renault workshop again to get clarity on the issue. According to the service advisor, the following needs to be replaced:

1. TDC sensor
2. Camshaft sensor
3. Temperature sensor
4. ABS sensor (not related though)

Apparently they have done computer diagnostics by logging into the ECU. I asked the service advisor if the sensors can be cleaned and replaced. But he says that I need all new sensors and Renault needs to replace it. He says that the sensors have to be set/calibrated by some machines that only they can do.

N.B: They also mentioned that the battery needs to be replaced.

Can the camshaft and ABS sensors be cleaned and replaced?

Donovan.

Re: Intermittent Starting problems - Renault Megane 1.6 (2006 Model)

Well , the probability of:-
1. TDC and loom
2. Crankshaft sensor
3. Map sensor
4. Temp sensor
all developing faults in a short time frame must rank alongside the chance of winning the lottery! Which temperature sensor? Air or coolant?
What to do ? Take the advice above! Change nothing clean the TDC, check the resistance of the air and coolant temperature sensors, check the crank sensor for continuity, the map sensor seems to have been excused. Again above, the crank sensor seems to be the favourite as a first replacement.

Addition. There is some confusion above including my post the tdc and the crank sensor are the same thing. the cam sensor is the second sensor and tends not to be so troublesome.
