ISP profiles?

Hi,

I've had Sky as my ISP for some time now and have never really been happy with the speed that I get (c. 1.7Mb) although I imagine that I'll get similar speeds with most of the other ISP because of our distance from the exchange, the crap BT copper wires etc........

However, I recall recently, someone mentioned something about profiles that the ISP uses for each individual customer! I am wondering whether there is any truth in this and whether I can ask for something to be done to increase the speed!

Reason I ask is because I have checked other peoples speeds in our area and the average is c.4.4Mb. Furthermore, BT reckon our line can handle around about 6.0Mb.

So, I'm wanting to upgrade our package with Sky to incorporate their TV/Broadband and Phone package as it will save me around £10 a month but am interested whether I can get them to change my speed with a threat to move but I need some sound information that I can lay before them

Re: ISP profiles?

Unless you live extremely close to the telephone exchange the only way to improve your line profile is by

Remove the old telephone bell wiring from all your internal tele sockets.

&

Don't turn your router off for at least 72 hours after turning it on. There's a computer on all BTs Internet wiring that insists a fault exists on the line and therefore reduces your line rate to compensate.

TBH I despaired of BT copper, & moved to cable.

10Mbs still isnt 10Mbs but its certainly not far off.

Re: ISP profiles?

Thanks Hondo, I've done all the internal stuff I can, bar getting one of those faceplate things! We are still living in the draconian age here and don't have the option of cable

Re: ISP profiles?

Hi Scatz if you've already removed to bell wiring don't buy a Face plate.

The face plate only removes the interference that is caused by the bell wiring.

This is a great site for DSL stuff
