Locked Word document

I'll start this post by admitting that I am clueless with computers, so may be missing something completely obvious that cauld be solved very easily by those of you in the know.

I've sent a word document home from work so I can work on it. I am able to open and view it but not update it, when I try I get the following message :- "The modification is not allowed because the document is locked"

My query - Is there a easy way to unlock this so I can work on it.

Thanks for any help, but please keep it simple as I'm not the best with computers.

Dave.

Re: Locked Word document

Hi Dave,

Most likely thing is that there is a password set on it for modifications by the author. If you do not know this password, you'll need to get it off the person that created the document.

Below from MS website:
Quote:
If you see this message at the bottom of the application window when you try to modify a document: "This modification is not allowed because the document is locked," the document is protected with an editing restriction of No changes (Read only) or Comments in Word 2003 (or a restriction of Comments in Word 2002 and Word 2000). The document author used the Protect Document features to restrict editing. Menu commands also might be unavailable, depending on the permissions that were granted to you by the document author.

Note When you open a document that is protected by Information Rights Management (IRM) in Word 2003, you might have permission to view the document but not to change it. When you open the document, the Shared Workspace task pane opens by default on the right side of the application window. In the task pane, click View My Permissions to see your permissions.

Re: Locked Word document

When you say update, do you mean save any changes you have made to the document ? Maybe saving as a new document (without permissions) would skirt around the issue.

I'm trying to change the wording I made on a report I created. I can't even get into it to do this. I've tried saving it under a different name but still can't get into it.

As I say I'm not a computer whizz, I'll just update when I'm back at work. I have no trouble with it at work, having re written parts of it already.

Thanks for the replies though.

Re: Locked Word document

Are you using the same version of Word at home as you are at the office ? Could be a slight incompatibility between versions ?

Another way around it, may be to open the document your having problems with, highlight the text, copy it (edit menu / copy). Then open up a blank document, go back to the edit menu and choose paste. Then save it and send that one back to work.

Hope that helps.
