Talking Megane Scenic 1.9td 1997 Air-con

Firstly i would like to say hi to you all and thank you for reading this post...
I have a 1997 scenic which i love with a passion we have just completed nearly 2000 miles through france for our hols and she went like a dream i am a mechanic by trade but left the business 7 years ago so feel free to ask any questions your self if i can help i will but the one i have has stumped me a bit and i wondered if any of you have ever come across this issue - when i switch my air con on were normaly a stepper like action would kick in and raise the revs on your car but mine dosnt do this the revs drop down to about 400 when the car is moving and driving its fine untill again i stop at lights or juntions any idea peeps
