Burning smell from engine solved

I bought myself a 51 Plate Laguna 1.9Dci on Monday. Today i noticed a burning smell and after having my wheel ailignment adjusted this afternoon the "mechanic" told me "I think your clutch is on the way out due to the smell and supposed clutch slipping while driving it onto the ramp. I have driven it for three days over 100 miles through mainly stop start driving on the way and back from work and i thought the clutch was spot on. On the way home i tried the normal tests to see if clutch was slipping. Pulling away in second gear with handbrake on etc etc. Thankfully clutch seem fine. Also got my friend who knows his way around cars could not find a problom with it. I then opened bonnet which still had a burning smell. Did not take me long to find culprit responsible for smell. I took of the large plastic cover which covers most of the engine and the foam which was originally glued to the underside of it had come away and was basically sitting on the engine. Most of the foam was scorched black and in some parts had started to turn so soft and black it was like oil. Needless to say it took me ages to cleam most of the mess of the engine. Looking at it i would say most of the foam has slowly but surely fallen off over the years as i would say 30% has disappeared. Has this happened to any other Members and if so can the foam be bought seperate with the right adhesive etc or will the dealer try and fleece me by telling me the foam only comes as part of the plastic cover and will not be cheap lol At least it will be cheaper than a new clutch

Re: Burning smell from engine solved

Hi I was thinking of that but not sure how much louder the engine would be without the foam as i know it is purely there to reduce the noise levels.

Re: Burning smell from engine solved

Try driving it without the cover see if you can put up with it.
Taking the one off my Clio DCi does not make a lot of difference.

Re: Burning smell from engine solved

You could try replacing the foam using a can of "No-More-Big-Gaps" foam insulator filler. Then trim into shape using a knife.
