update to my post http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/espace/11353-renault-espace-heater-fan-not-working-fix-pics.html

well the heater has given up

there has been a very light electrical burning smell not all
the time just a slight hint.

the problem now is no fan and no lights or functions on the control panel.
in my previous post i still had lights and functions to the control
panel.

so i decide to check the heater
i removed the top of the dashboard and check the wiring to the resistor pack
the plug with the 2 wires has burnt connectors

i now remove the resistor pack to check the damage

resistor pack is damaged one of the connectors fell out when i removed the plug
i decide to see the extent of the damage and open the resistor pack
it is well and truely ******

so the items i need to replace are the wiring loom and resistor pack
but not today i need a temporary fix

to do a temporary fix

i know i have to replace the heater fan wiring loom so i can try to do a temporary fix

the two wires into the resistor pack are earth in and earth to the motors
so i remove some of the plastic on the cables and twist these together and tape them up i didnt want to remove the plug as i still need to plug this into the resistor pack to supply the earth to the control panel

joining these wires will only give me top speed and stops the control panel from controlling the speed of the fan

with the earth supplied to the control panel
all functions work apart from the speed( full all the time)

so i have bypassed the resistor pack but only have top speed

its been like this for a couple of months (1000 miles) with no problems

Heater resistors

If you don't mind soldering them in Maplins can supply you with repacement wire wound resistors for a few 10's of pence. the resistors are wired in series so if one goes you usually are only left with high speed. I replaced the one on my wifes first MK1 Laguna but can't remember the resistor value. It is listed in the schematic in the Haynes manual.

Failing that take the whole resistor board (not the whole heater) to Maplins and one one of their guys will usually be able to work out the value for you. Most of them at the weekend are part time electronics students and are more than happy to help.

Maplin > USB Turntable will find your nearest store

this is a different setup to the laguna these are ran by microchips plus there is a hole the size of a penny in the middle of the board

Just like Renault to make things overly complicated. Lovely cars to to drive but getting less DIY friendly by the year.
