Finished changing a 2.0 F4R engine in 1999 Mk1 Phase2 Scenic today.

There is a problem with No 3 cylinder not firing properly if at all? so the engine is running pretty lumpy. The engine isn't breathing excesivley from the oil filler and there doesn't appear to be any pressure coming from the dipstick tube.

1) Have changed the plug as it was wet.

2) Have changed the pencil coil for a known good one and checked that a spark was being produced when connected to No3 coil connector and earthed out on the engine.

3) Have swapped the injector rail over for a known good one.

But still when I disconnect No3 injector there is no difference in the running of the engine. There is a very loud tappet type noise which would seem to be coming from No3?

Hopefully I can borrow a compression tester tomorrow. Though I’m wondering if I do have a faulty hydraulic lifter? Would this make the engine misfire? And is it likely to have an impact on the compression test ? Or is the problem going to be a damaged valve:think:

A compression test should give you the answer, if the compression on no3 is significantly lower than the rest its probably a valve problem
