Thanks to all for your advise. The problem seems to have been fixed. The dip stick being 1 cm out caused "a Low crank case pressure, adding air through the inlet circuit causing a very lean air/fuel mixture which can cause stalling". I hope that this may solve other renault owners problems and make others aware of what can happen if the dip stick is not fitted correctly as the engine is vacuum sealed.
