I have the dreaded blue smoke and losing oil combination. Before I go to the garage to have them tell me I need the piston rings done, has anyone tried an engine restore product called Ametech? It claims to cut out the blue smoke and reduce oil loss, but I'm wondering if it is like a wonder drug that doesn't actually work.
Roughly how much would a garage charge to repair my engine, does anyone think?

I've tried it. I put it in an Escort and MX-3 I had, bot with over 100k on the clock. Neither had any running issues but though I'd try it anyway. TBH I can't say I noticed a difference in either. Nothing like they were claiming but I just figured neither engine could've been that worn.

If you look on the net there are claims that is does work, and others saying that all it'll do is clog your oil filter.
The main concern for me is, if it's as good as they say it is, why is it not for sale in shops, you can only get the stuff direct from Ametech or ebay.

Could be worth a try if you think your motor is bad anyways, can;t do much more damage and it might actually work.

It might not be your rings though. That job would be expensive and it might work out cheaper just to source a 2nd hand engine and fit that. It might just be your valve seales of a head gasket faliure. A leakdown test might be worth a go to find out for sure.

Thanks for that. I'd best get a professional opinion first I suppose. Gutting really, only had the car a month, its only got 88k on the clock and fully stamped book. Bloke who sold it to me must have stuck new oil in and something to cover the smoke.

It may be the incorrect oil was used at the previous oil change or there is also a possibility the engine breathers are blocked:)

There are a number of reasons for the engine burning oil into the exhaust so it may well be worth getting another opinion as to why.

Looks like Mikey was right in the first place. Its the oil rings I'm afraid. Can't afford an engine rebuild or replacement so its hello Renault, goodbye Renault in 6 months.

I'm off back to Vauxhall now.
