Hi,

My brakes keep squeaking quite loudly and i thought that theyay need replacing but ive been told they dont. Is there anything i can put on the brakes to make them stop squeaking or should i just replace them??
Btw- i drive a 54 renault megane saloon automatic 4 door.

Brakes (Disc's) often squeal if the anti squeal shims, or the back of the pads are dry, I use copper-slip grease, remove the pads & smear a light coating on the REAR of the pads, this has the effect of stopping the vibration that creates the noise.

Check first you don't have a stone or something wedged in the calipers, & that the pads are serviceable.

Copper grease is no longer recommended to be used on or near brakes as it rots the caliper piston gaitors and is very good at attracting brake dust.

There are numerous so-called anti-squeal products out there which are much more suitable.

One which I have found to be very good is one called Permatex.

Brake squeal is usually caused by the pad vibrating between either the disc, caliper piston or caliper housing so it is essential these are clean and in good condition.
