How can I tell if my cam belt has broken, apart from the engine not starting. The engine turns over, no rattle, but will not start

Depends which engine, remove the oil filler cap and check for cam or rocker movement. If the belt has stripped a few teeth it may still be driving the camshaft.

The trouble is, the crankshaft drive sprocket can often 'slip' due to the pulley bolt coming loose. In this case, the belt will still be intact, but the timing has been lost - with the usual horror story ensuing

A compression check will reveal all.......
