Hi all im a newbie have a question about the sprockets they have had what appears to be a gaurd fitted to them,one of them has gone completley and the other one is bent and buckeled and probably caused the belt to jump and damage my engine,wat i need to know is do these gaurds need to be there or can i fit the new belt without them,Thanks in advance,john.

Does your car have VVT? if it does the dephaser pulley doesn't have a guard. I would think that the damage to the guard is probably as a consequence of the belt failing. It's the crank shaft sprocket that usually tracks the timing belt. This is a 2.0 cylinder head and is very similar to the 1.6. I would straighten the bent one out the best you can and re-use.
