I drove to work today and when I got back in car to come home, the ignition would not turn, it was solid. Tried to jiggle key and steering wheel but only managed to put steering lock on! I've had the car recovered to home and now need to get a secondhand barrel. Are they easy to change? Do I need any special tools?

Have tried several keys. Barrel is still solid. Local dealership has quoted stupid price to replace ((£400-450 to supply and fit new barrel!).

Just need to know if its possible as a diy job without resorting to special tools?

Someone has said that If i remove the barrel, I should be able to start the car using a screwdriver and because the car has an immobiliser, they can't steal it anyway, even if they got in.
