The oil filter in behind the right wheel drive shaft and is so tricky to grip with my hands.

Do I need to take off the wheel off to get to it better?

In my experience it's rare for any screw-on type oil filter to be removed by hand.

Most people use a special tool for the job and yes it is easier to access with the car jacked up and wheel removed.

Do a google search for "oil filter wrench" a variety of types some be easily found.

My dad has a oil filter wrench but it was to big to grip it.
We then had to use a hammer and a screw driver to get it off, took over half an hour, it was really stuck on there.

I bought a filter wrench that has a strap rather than a chain that fits easier round the filter, you should be able to get one from most car spares shops.

They come off if you have sufficiently strong hands and and can maintain the torque for a wee while.

get some emery cloth, put one wrap around the filter, tighten the filter tool over the emery cloth, it will grip nicely without slipping
