Guys,

Further to a previous thread of mine here (the air con wasn't cooling any more) I took the car to a local garage which I was recommended for air con (there don't seem to be any dedicated air con specialists in Yeovil). They were running a free aircon health check promotion too which seemed good. However, it came out of the health check with a bill for gas and dye, and news that my compressor was bust! I seem to remember that he quoted over £300 for a new one.

I guess it's just my sceptical nature, but I was a bit suspicious that maybe the free air con promotion was a bit of a swizz to get business, and I'm thinking maybe there could be a simpler problem with the air con.

Has anyone here had any experience of Clio Mk2 air con compressors failing? Or any ideas as to other potential faults that this could be? Also, any recommendations for sourcing a reasonably priced compressor if it does turn out to be that?!

Thanks!

Hi,

Hi sorry you have not had any feedback on your post yet.

Unfortunately I know as much about aircon as I do about the man on the moon. I'm sure someone will be along to assist shortly.

Regards

Hi Marv - yeh like you I am always sceptical about free checks. You could try Quick-fit as some of their depots have had an offer on recently - saying if a regas doesn't fix it they won't charge. In some areas there are guys offering a mobile service - maybe worth checking out yellow pages or Yell.com.:)

Thanks guys, and sorry about my late reply - not being rude, just been on holiday for the last week!

I'll try out somewhere like kwikfit for the air con checks. Thanks

I have a friend who is refrigeration engineer and he says the vast majority of AC faults are due to degassing due to lack of use. The seal on the shaft of the compressor requires oil to be present to make a gas seal and dries out if not used. It doesn’t to the seal any harm in most cases it just looses the gas. He recommends you run the AC for at least 10min per month to get it oiled up.

Thanks Len,

Sounds slightly promising if it could be just a seal. Or even if I do have to replace the compressor I never knew that you have to run it every month... so thanks again!

Hi Marv - may be worth getting the air-con properly serviced - not just a regas as a good service includes adding lubricant and leak detection dye.:)

yeah, I would like to do that - if I knew that the system was working. I'm just a bit reluctant to spend about £60-£80 if the compressor is bust and everything would just leak out... well, gonna have to do something about it anyway, the days are starting to get a bit too hot and sticky!

Kwik Fit recently checked my Clio mk2 02 plate for air conditioning faults. they told me that the compressor had failed and a replacement is needed.

Resolved you prob yet?

Hi, I am David and I know a bit about A/C. Don't have a lot of issues with Renaults. Doubt K.F will be able to assist, they haven't been doing it long enough to gain experience!

Did your garage say why they belived the compressor was finished? Did they say they had found a leak (I note they used UVA dye kit)? What pressure reading did they get from the high and low pressure systems? When they, emptied the system, how much gas was left before they re-charged it? All these questions/observations will assist diagnosis.

A company like Europarts (for a new compressor) or 247 spares (2nd hand) are worth trying.

Hi Badboi - I would recommend you get a second opinion froma good air-con specialist. It could be leaking seals at the condenser
