Sorry if this isn't in the right place. I'm a vergin at this and couldn't find a place for steering.

My lad aquired a 2001 1.2 16v Clio.
Has all the usual issues but the snagger is some stiffness in the steering and no self centering action.
Power assistance seems fine when turning with wheels on the ground but the stiffness is very apparent when moving the steering wheel from a stationary position.

Disconnnected rack and lower steering column from the upper motor and the reluctance to turn seems to be in the motor/upper column.

Not really sure how these feel.
Can hear a slight noise on bottom bearing in the housing.
Very very slight notchiness when turning wheel but I don't know how the motor acts to turn the column.
There is about 4 degrees of movement at the wheel before the lower shaft turns and this does seem a little looser.
Once that lash or freeplay is taken up it feels like it's binding.

Anyone had one of the columns in bits or had the same issue.
Pleeez :d
