My '99 megane is proving to be a bit dificult to change gear. The clutch travel is so far now that the 'bite' is only at the last 1" of pedal travel.

Is it possible to adjust the clutch, or is it a new clutch job ??

I assume you have a cable operated clutch. If so then check the slef-adjustment mechanism hasn't reset itself or gone out of adjustment. If al is OK in that respect then it likely the clutch may have come to the end of its useful life.

yes it's a cable one. How do i check the mechanism as you dscribe..I have a haynes but can't make sense of it.

The self-adjustment system is at the top of the clutch pedal and involves a ratchet and pawl mechanism.
