I took my clio to Renault Manchester yesterday and they said the car would fail its MOT as the clip on the driveshaft had come off and it could have been damaged due to exposure to the elements.
They offered me 2 options:

1. Add new glip and grease the driveshaft £75
2. Replace the whole driveshaft £350

They said if the driveshaft has been damaged then i may experince a judder when setting off or a noise when turning the wheel full lock.

As I know bugger all about these things can someone tell me whether only doing the cheaper option was a good choice??

I'm surprised they've diagnosed a potentially damaged driveshaft on the basis that there *might* be something wrong, with no actual symptoms. Yes, there's a risk that contaminants will have found their way into the CV joint, but it should be possible to just replace the joint rather than the whole shaft. Still, if they're talking about £350 including labour, then maybe they are just talking about the joint rather than the shaft.

If it's the outer joint (nearest to the wheel) and it's not showing and signs of making a noise when driven slowly forwards and backwards on both full left and full right lock, then I would say it's not much of a gamble to just put a new clip on. There's always potential for it to be the wrong decision and I may be proved wrong further down the line, but I'd pay £75 now for something that's almost a sure-fire fix rather than £350 for a guaranteed one.

£75 to replace a clip on a CV joint?

Blimey.....I must review my charging policy!.

As said before,a clip and some grease would be cheap, and it's not a difficult job.I'd find a local independant garage or Renault specialist who can do the job for a quarter of this price.

Thanks for the advice chaps... shame its a little too late

Breakdown of costs:

Hose clip 70-90 = £2
Hose clip 50-70 = £1
Motrio Gaiter = £1

Fit clip and grease to O/S/F = £74!!!!

Thats the last time I take it to Renault Manchester

I've tried moving the car with the wheel on full lock by directions and there is a very slight rubbing / knocking noise when i turn the wheel left......

Can someone tell me what will happen if this problem gets worse? Will it cause a lot of damage?

Luke
