Dual mass flywheel - are they bullet proof then?

Hi all

I have a question which google finds difficult to Anwser for me!

My megane has an intermittent clutch slip.... No obvious oil leaks leaking on to box.....

Anyway I've bought a new clutch/clutch plate and a luk CSC (concentric slave)

My car is the 6 speed 1.9 dci...
It's booked in at the gearbox centre who insist flywheel should also be done - theres no gain to them replacing it or not as the box is off and its just an extra 10 minutes..... Or so...

Now I'm having NO rattles or noise to say dmf is worn or even failing... Car is on 117,000 so is due it's first clutch! (I've had a mondeo tdci so I know the signs of dmf!)

How reliable / bullet proof / how long etc etc are they suitable for... I know for a fact I won't be replacing the dmf as I've not got the money and would rather sort clutch slip and sell it quick, and know the garage will have no gain in saying its worn or not....

Another gearbox centre who wanted to charge me £270 + vat!!!! Said its common that the flywheel drops and rubs the clutch plate.... What? That can't be possible as the flywheel is fixed to the engine and i could only imagine a catastrophic failure if that was true! So took that with a pinch of salt along with there rip off price!

Have been quoted £40 by my brother in law who can do it but will be a few hours each night and a little unsure on the hydraulic system... Or £200 inc oil and its dropped off in the morning and back by dinner time! So the £200 is more feasible as they have the correct tools for the job!

SO IS THE DMF ON THE DCIS A COMMON FAILURE?

Hi all,

Clutch is perfect now, absolutely spot on!

Clutch is fine, and the mechanic said the hydraulics will do the work in place of self adjusting.

im happy, so now on to the niggles..... water leaking in to door card on drivers side, 2 front windows totally dead, and a woodpecker in the engine

Hi all,

I can confirm now, that there is nothing wrong with the DMF on my renault megane 1.9 dci - it is engine f9q 800, which apprantley is uncommon for the dmf to fail, my car is on 117,000, original luk clutch.

How ever, if supplying your own clutch, and you have the same as above, it is a self adjusting clutch plate, the kit i had was a non self adjusting.... the gearbox guy said hes fitted them before (self to non) and no problems, and he cant say for sure on mine until its back together, but the non adjusting kit bolted straight up no prpblems.

so there we go, panicking for nothing, just await the news if the clutch engages etc etc when put back together and on the ground, its a gearbox centre so they should know what there doing!

Will update....

Thanks paul,

Very true, wear and tear, it moves / rotates just as much as the clutch...

If the dmf lasts a year in its current state then that's fine, it's a workhorse for the wife, so it earns her money so within a few months the clutch change and labour will have paid its self, then we can look at of anything does go wrong to convert to smf for under £400 plus the labour so £600 in a year / 18 months time... If we still have the car that is.

But at present 117,000 no documents to mention clutch change its not doing to bad on the original!

Ill let the gearbox centre know I'm not going to be replacing the dmf so just leave it alone and don't disturb it just give it a blast to get any dust out as you should do when gearbox is off etc, and go from there, I've known failing dmfs last from a few months to a few years so not bad and this is on the mondeos which have alot more torque!

For all i know clutch could have been changed previous and CSC not which could be leaking causing the clutch to slip as plate is wet. Who knows, I have clutch and CSC so will go from there! £200 seems very good as garages are going off autodata which is 8 hours
And 280 plus vat!!! Ouch!

Smf conversion is £385 not including fork? That's a valeo make. For anyone's reference who are looking at this route!

Can't say I'm finding much on failing dmfs on the DCIS, I'm not ruling it out but as Paul states it is a wear and tear item, I have no tow bar and it appears to be doing very well on its original clutch! So not really had a hard life as such!

Got rid of my mondeo because the dmf was clunking!
Typical.

Fair play to the megane it's amazing on fuel!
