Hi all my first proper post. I have just purchased a Safrane 2.2 looking on Wilk it says it sould be a 12v so is it a 6 cylinder or a 4 cylinder with 3 valve per cylinder, just curious.
Can't look at the moment as it doesn't get delivered till tomorrow :)

Hi there, welcome to the forums.

According to my What Car? archive collection, the 2.2 was a 4-cylinder unit, therefore it will be a 3 valve-per-cylinder format.

Enjoy your car, and post some pics of it when possible - we don't see as many of these cars as we should.

Paul:)

I remember my first time driving to the Med from Paris back in 2000. I ordered a BMW 5-Series from Avis at Paris CDG, and was rather dejected when it turned out to be a 2.0 litre Safrane.
It was rather underpowered, but not too bad once up to a cruise, and surprisingly economical.

Most things will seem underpowered now, I've just sold a Supra :) but economy sounds good for a change:driving:

If it's a 12 valve then it's definately 3 valves per cylinder.

From my info, the 2.2 12 valve engine was only ever used in the Safrane. There are a few different models that used the 2.2 8 valve, and a 21 that used a 2.0 12 valve but no 2.2 12 valve.

Yours could be one of three engines...

2.2 8 valve which had a code J7T 4766 or J7T Z766 which produced 137hp and was used from 1996-98

2.2 8 valve which had a code J7T 762 which produced 107hp and was used from 1992-2001

2.2 12 valve which had a code J7T 760 or J7T 761 which produced 137hp and was used from 1992-96

It certaintly looks like the 12 valve was only used for a short time, and was then replaced by an equally powerfull 8 valve for some reason.I don't recall any other manufacturer using this engine,so I guess it was designed and built solely by Renault.

Hope that helps.:)
