I drove my Clio Extreme 1.6 16v an hour ago fine. Went to start now and engine will not do anything. Plenty of power in battery. Engine making no noise and all kind of lights on dashboard. its 55 plate and good as gold. I have notices occasional sqeeeky fanbelt sound lately - where will I see this on the engine?

Can you be a bit more specific?
Engine turning over, not turning over?
Click from the starter motor or not?
How do you know battery is ok?
Is the alternator belt still attached?
What lights are coming on?

Thanks for reply. I read a few other posts and tried the lights and they did not work and gradually all power has gone - so I have just bought a new battery and am hoping this will do the trick. fingers crossed it will not need to be followed up with a visit to a renault garage to update computer thingy.

Well, hopefully you haven't been premature in buying the replacement battery, because it could be a charging (alternator) problem. However if you weren't getting any warning lights before this happened you should be OK.
