Good morning all.

The remote c/locking on my 2000 Espace began responding intermittently a while ago and has steadily been getting worse. I am pretty sure it is a loose connection somewhere because once it is stationary and responding it will carry on responding reliably until I get in the car and drive it around. Then when I stop and find it doesn’t work it won’t work again until it is driven around some more.

I have taken it to the dealer and they reckon I need a new receiver unit. Unfortunately, the receiver unit is part of the instrument panel and that costs £800!!!

Obviously, I’d rather not pay that much money for what is, essentially, a working unit. Even the receiver part works – albeit intermittently. So I was wondering if any of you people have any experience in this regard. Namely:

How difficult is the panel to remove?
Will it break?
How do I identify the receiver unit?

Failing that is there anybody who can fix it for less?

Many thanks for the reply Fixmycar. Many more thanks for the link. Since it looks like a relatively straight forward process I shall be giving it a go soon. Cheers.

PS. I also thought the batteries were on the way out so replaced them in both key fobs. No joy.

Update

Thought I'd post a reply just in case anyone else experiences similar problems. To recap the remote key is not locking/unlocking the car.

Following the instructions provided by Fixmycar I removed the cover to the instrument panel. Underneath it on the passenger side of the panel is sat a sensor of some sort (Cobra part No. 5460). This is connected to a larger unit on the other side of the panel (Cobra part No. 0144). Thinking that the intermittant nature of the problem pointed to a lose connection I removed all connections from the main unit and then reconnected them. To my joy in all started working again.

COngratulating myself on a job well done I put the unit back in its holder and replaced the dash cover. Just to make sure I rechecked the remote C/L and it was still working. I had to wait for a while before I needed to drive it. After that, to my great dissapointment, it stopped working.

I have now called in a independent alarm specialist to help get to the bottom of this mystery. However, if there are people out there who can help solve it as well I would appreciate your input. I feel there are enough clues to get to the root cause. So a bit of background:

Apparently, according to my friendly specialist, the Espace is not shipped with an alarm fitted in the factory, it is fitted by the importer. The alarm is designed to tap into the car's electrics and supplement the immobilizer. This would suggest that the remote central locking feature is built into the car as the remote key is Renault made. This would also suggest that faulty remote central locking would be due to the car and not the alarm.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, the whole things springs into life if I reset the Cobra alarm. How is that happening?

I have exactly the same problem (the car started to ignore the remote about a week ago, first occasionally, but gradually getting worse). Had it in for a service today and mentioned it to the garage for them to check it out. When I picked the car up, they said that the remote was fine (as they could see the signals using some external receiver thingy), so that it would most likely be a problem with the receiver. And that would mean to replace the instrument panel...
