I had the same problem mate.
you need to take the distributor cap off, held by i think it was three screws.Very hard work your hands will get shredded on the radiator.I done this to double check my feelings that distributor cap was the culprit only to find that it was to blame but a replacement was 24hrs away.I gave the old cap a good clean using wire brush and steel wool on the metal contacts to get rid of the crappy build up on them.
The cap has been doin fine for the last 2yrs since. And in honesty i would have replaced it if one was readily available cos the metal contacts looked quite warn.SHI* it will probably breakdown tommorow.

Hi dads taxi, I agree with umed, definitely worth cleaning the contacts inside the distributor cap. ***** of a job but costs nothing except blood, skin and a bad back. Chip all the crap off the contacts and give the whole cap a good clean inside and out with petrol. Mine needs doing every two or three years otherwise it gets to be impossible to start when cold/wet. I wouldn't bother to replace it though, just clean it every few years. Definitely the first thing I'd try if it hasn't been done for a while.
