On my ancient Clio there is an orange capped dipstick at the front Left of the engine but I think newer models do not have them. There should be a plug half way up the box that you remove and top up until oil comes out.
Hi Yes Chris is right there is a plug half way down the front of the box if you take this bolt out and oil runs out your level is ok if not you can fill it up from the top opening at the top end of the box and when oil starts to run out of the plug hole on the side your topped up hope this helps
Tommy,if your Espace is automatic and you have no dipstick, then the level is more involved to check.
I think I can remember reading something on here about it.....
I'll have a search and get back to you.
Edit;Nope, can't find it!.I don't often say this, but it might be worth contacting your local dealer. The oil level is critical in Auto boxes and I think in this instance you'd be far better advised to get it checked by someone.
tommy if you need a manual for that engine and box get hold of one for a renault 25 or the volvo 260 a they use the same engine and box you may get alot of clues there .i had a volvo 265 auto if remeber right they had a dipstick which doubled as the filler hope this helps good luck keith .
