Can anybody tell me where the fuse box is located in the car (not the one under the bonnet next to the battery) and how to access it?

If it's a MK1? to the right of the steering colum and remove the cover

Inside the glovebox, hinges down from the roof of the box.

Dave is correct. It is in the "roof" of the glove box. It opens a little, and although it feels like you are forcing it, it will open further, so you can just see the fuse map. A pair of tweezers is good for removing the fuses.
