welcome to the forum, brown gunge?? i would guess it could do with a new oil & filter, when was it last changed?
if it is a light coloured gunge, like salad cream you may have water leaking into the engine via the head gasket, check the radiator resevoir for signs of oil, like foam. But as you describe as brown i just imagine that it is old oil that has got hot from when it was low, it just needs a flush out and oil change(& plus a new filter) cheap fix too

This happens in a lot of cars that are driven short journeys in cold weather, the engine never gets hot enough to get rid of the condensation in the engine and it builds up to form the "gunge" I cured it on an Astra I had by blanking off part of the radiator but as your girlfriend never checks her oil she probably never gets it serviced so an oil and filter change might be overdue.

Yes, this is 'sludge' which is emulsified oil & water (but less water than would appear if the head gasket were to blame - hence, the colour). I would concur with what's already been mentioned - there are a number of additives which help to dissolve and flush out the old oil (and contaminants) and is added prior to changing the oil itself. I would suggest getting this done sooner than later, as this will probably have accumulated in the filter and galleries within the engine - which can lead to oil starvation, and premature wear.

Every now and again (once the service has been carried out), give the car a boot up the motorway for a few miles, and this will help prevent a reoccurence.

my girlfriends clio (03 Reg 1.2, 22k) has the same in the cap.

she only goes 5 miles to work and back every day.

I've changed the oil filter & new oil.
Its still there a bit but not as bad as before.

Its not due a service for another 8 month as well.

Hi there - did you use an oil flush beforehand? The reason I ask is that there may have been some sludge in the oil ways (galleries) in the engine which is now moving around due to the more viscous fresh oil.

Plus of course, if the car is still being used for short journeys - then the problem will still continue to occur. Try giving the car a good run on the motorway every week or so, it will help to reduce this from building-up. The moisture will evaporate off through the engine breather.

Hey Paul,

I did by a tin of engine flush, but the garage didn't use it.

Oh well.

Its due a proper service in a few months, so will get it done again then.

I'm not so concerned about the white gunk at the mo.
More concerned about the bloody Toxic light coming back on.
Change the lambda 4 weeks ago, that fixed it, now its back on again.

Time to find a specialist in the Warwick area.
