2001 mk1 scenic dci 1.9:

I am trying to hold the car at 2500 revs while checking coolant level (to get rid of air lock) and bleed correctly.

I am cursed with no parts diagram and cannot for the life of my find the accelerator cable .... ?

How (a mad question) can I rev the engine from under the bonnet.

(finding another to rev it is not an answer I'm looking for)

You can't, no throttle cable, fly by wire nowadays.
You can wedge the throttle a little.

TBH mate, I can't think of ever bleeding while at high revs...tickover with occasional blips on throttle to liven up flow and jar any air locks yes, but not holding it at revs.

Why not just leave the cap off,
Take the car for a run,
Allow to cool take the cap off, place it on the front drivers seat.
Lock the car, go out next morning check the level, and refit the cap..

Once thermostat opens, then water will flow, Thermostat starts to open at 80+ ,
If the car is now switched off, and allowed to cool, enough to take the cap off without the water rising , then gravity will allow air to come to the top..

Hence taking for a run, allowing the engine to cool slightly , removing cap,

Ok. so the key here is the cap off overnight after getting up to temp (thermo open) on a run.

The result will be different if cap on overnight due to air not being allowed out under pressure. ?

Car run to hot on short run.
waited half an hour and removed carefully rad reservoir cap.
cap on drvs seat.
will check in morning but on immediately removing cap was lower than low mark.
(it started on tip level mark)

but I have not tried this method and cannot be thought of as right pre this test.

will update

YOU have put the cap on your seat..
IF an emergency arises, and you shoot out and jump in the car, and the cap is under the bonnet lid.
YOU will forget about it and drive off

Yep
Same when doing brakes, and you have to leave the car for a few days..
Big sign over the steering wheel.
NO BRAKES,
Blanket over the engine, big sign on the steering wheel..
Thankfully not had to get a mangled blanket out of an engine for a few years now..

And People rush/forget,

update :
as all know car suffering coolant loss otherwise a ok car.

tried what was said above :
-run to temperature
-switch off , when cooled off with cap , top up if necessary, leave overnight with cap on drv seat (good idea )
-in morning topped up a very small splash, cap on.
-90m drv to work. when cooked and checked again coolant way too low barely visible .

I did the above with no bleeding via 2 bleed screws trusting in gravity only.

so next it's the next method:
-fill to neck of reservoir , cap off
-drv about a mile up down a hill , cap off.
-- the reetbof the sequence I will have to look up.

But is this looking like head gasket ? there are no leaks u was told by garage under pressure test ? coolant never discolour? but always fizzing off cap?
a new cap ?
are there different types of cap for my car ? mine again off Ebay looks same as old one has 700 written on it ?

if its head gasket then I'm stumped

DONT DONT DONT do that, you will screw your engine up big time..
Do what I put, and just top back up,

Even if it takes three days/nights, top up slowly
NEVER leave the cap off while driving..

If its still losing fluid, then find out from where..
DONT get condemning head gasket on one of these engines

OK: Status
I have done as you (ours2012) said exactly so far. I have not done the other incorrect ..... ever yet. I was stopped in time.

So it is now topped up - cap on.
I will remove cap again and let gravity do its thing.

process:
-run to temperature
-switch off , when cooled, take off cap , top up if necessary, leave overnight with cap on drv seat (good idea )
-in morning top up if necessary.
-Cap on and drive monitoring.

Repeat sequence - until fixed.

Q) I bought a new reservoir cap. a cheapo from ebay but for my car.
Can i ask could this be an issue ? as it does after a long drive sound like its gassing off the cap ?
Are there more than one type of cap for my car ? system runs at different pressures ?
