When i went to my local Renault Dealer this morning for some oil i asked them to check my cars history out at this garage because this was the garage it was purchased from new to find out that the complete auto gear box was replaced at 27k under warranty with the first owner but they could not tell me why its not bothering me that much as this means the box i have has only done about 10k to the cars 36k but iam still going ahead with the oil transmission change it really has me thinking of what must have gone wrong to have changed the hole box what do yous think??????

Hi Donald, youll prob find that it didnt take much ... these guys are not in the biz of being mechanics any more just technicians, and any repair would have to go to an transmission specialist as I reckon most dealers dont have the kit or skills to strip a box down any more, its just easier to replace, especially if Renault is paying ....

Alternatively it was maybe the subject of a technical bulletin (O calls? or something like that they are called) and Renault wanted the box back? ... Maybe one of the RTE's can shed some light on why a lot of this kit is replaced rather than repaired?

Just a thought :)

My 53 plate Espace had the Gearbox replaced under warranty at ~20k, there didn't appear to be anything wrong with it, it was replaced under a recall:crazy:

Autoboxes were always a specialist repair
you always had to have a very clean environment
in which to work. little galleries in which the oil would run
needed to be pristine

It look time and I can see why the dealers would not undertake repairs. Probably not got the skills either, hence a replacement.

Renault gearboxes

Having driven Renaults for 46 years with both manual and auto, I find it strange that this forum and it's members find so many problems with gearboxes. I have driven over the last 16 years with auto boxes without a single problem and that is over approx 416000 miles. In fact when I look at it, I have driven approx 1196000 miles and never a problem. I wonder why?

Hi i think it is as simple as this if your a nice stable driver and are not harsh with the car and the car is well serviced i think your chances are very good with having no problems and if you are harsh and do not service when you should well your going to run in big problems with Auto Transmission's i have never had a problem yet with mine apart from the gear box being changed at 27k with the first owner the reason way well i do not know but i think its like anything you either get a good one or a bad one.

My Esapce was manual. A number of them were recalled due to a manufacturing issue. In fact, when I was buying the Espace a broker found one for me which he/we turned down because it had had the gearbox chaged! It was one of the Ellen McArthur fleet vehicles and I thought some young sailor type had been ragging it around the Isle of White - not so!!

lol ive got teenagers to doing my nut in:rofl:

There is a few company's that make and sell them but i made mine myself from a 12 motor and fan from a bike and then in cased it into a Ripspeed cone shaped Air Filter with a sensor fitted and when the car sucks air in under acceleration the fan turns on and then induces air into the engine just for that little extra when towing the caravan as you know auto gear boxes are not the best at towing. They cost about £290 to buy and in my view there not worth more than £50 but there you go.
