About six months' ago, my megane failed to start. After several attempts it worked. Since then, the problem reoccurs. Sometimes, it starts first time, others, it fails to start and then second time, just a click. To get it to start, I leave the car to lock itself and then retry; most times this works. Other times, it needs a third try. My local garage can't find the problem, nor can a Renault dealer and an independent mechanic who has tried various tings that the dealer didn't bother with, like fuse box. I should be grateful if any has any suggestions to make.

What sort of click?
Fairly loud and round by gearbox??

I'm surprised neither garage nor dealer nor independent haven't suggested starter motor with that sort of intermittent fault and description?

I'll trot out my standard answer.
Listen to DancingDad and ours2012. They're nearly always right.
After that, if the dash (and radio and LCD screen) briefly goes dark when you press the button, then lights up again, pound to a penny it's a corroded starter solenoid tag.
