Hi there, just went to Renault today and they said I'll need a 5 year cam change (I think it's cam belt rather than cam shaft but forget now).

The price was rather horrific at 900 quid.

Can I get away without doing this or is that asking too much?

And are there any indicators that suggest my cam will go soon? One thing I've noticed is that the car runs much better on super unleaded rather than the normal stuff, but that could just be coincidence.

Any help gratefully received.

Cambelt is one of those essentials that you absolutely should not ever take risks with.

Scout around for a cheaper price by all means - if you are lucky you should be able to more or less divide that figure by 3 - but don't leave it too long.

Oh, and as to your second question - it could certainly go when everything is apparently running normally and without any warning whatsoever. (Sorry, but you did ask !)

£900 for a cambelt change!.:eek::eek::eek:

Hopefully one of our main dealer techs can tell us more about the belt change on one of these and why exactly it's so much money.
