...recently replaced the weak batteries in my N-reg Laguna ignition key. Now the remote door unlock function doesn't work

Without stating the obvious but are the batteries fitted the right way round. Most good locksmihs have a means of testing the output from the keyfob.:)

You should see a small LED by the button, see if this flashes when the button is pressed if not then as suggested the batteries could be the wrong way round. The positive side of the battery should connect to the printed circuit.
