I have a Megane II that has been sat idle for a little over a month (a pothole took out my front wheel). I've now had a replacement wheel fitted, and was trying to slowly drive the car to make sure it was OK.

Regardless of whether I am moving or stationary, there is a knocking sound coming from underneath when I turn the steering wheel in either direction.

The car is booked for it's MOT (it expired during the past month) - would you suggest that it is relatively safe to drive the 15 miles to the MOT station? There was no knocking from the steering prior to this.

When you say it took the wheel out, have you checked for broken springs, bent wishbone the side you hit, the track rod end, track control arm..
All possible to damage by hitting a pot hole..

Only you can say if it feels safe to drive, We have no idea, or how we could possibly advise if its safe or not

I would not drive it to an MOT with a steering knock.
Simple fact is it is going to fail.

No garages or mobile mechanics closer that can have a look?
