Hello to all,

Could someone shed some light into this:

When I turn on the ignition key, an electrical chirping sound
somewhere at the bottom of diesel pump appears, goes off with ignition key turned off. I was able to start the engine before even with this sound, could that be some solenoid at the bottom of the pump? I have no diagram of 1.9dti diesel pump, no idea how many solenoids does it have - checked stop solenoid it is ok. Now it is _very_ difficult to start the engine, needs about 15-20 tries with starter motor. Once it starts, there is no problem - drives ok. But then again, if it accidentally stalls at some intersection, I am stuck there.

Fuel being delivered thru the fuel filter ok, rubber bulb firm, no air bubbles.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to eliminate a chirp, which sounds like duff relay/solenoid, quite powerful sound.
And are there any more than a stop solenoid in 1.9 dti diesel pump? Does it have cold start and hydraulic load adjustment solenoids?

Car battery is brand new/charged, starter turns very well.
Fuel is not being delivered to the engine when starting doesnt matter if the engine is hot or cold. Feels like some kind of timing is wrong, engine starts kinda prematurely. Some bootstrapping is failing somewhere in fuel pump I believe.

Thank you,

Sounds like a pump problem - these pumps have self-bleed facility which seems to be kicking in for some reason - it could be the pump is drawing air in somewhere - or it it within the control system.

P.S. Have you checked the fuel filter for water etc., Could also be a faulty fuel filter head which when primed is pressurised from the "in" port but when running the fuel is drawn by vacuum from the diesel pump.:)

Hi Slowgrind - I take it your fuel pump is accelerator cable controlled. If so the pump needs two other means of control - the stop solenoid - which you reckons is OK. There will be another control which controls the fast idle speed which is governed by engine temperature. The chirping noise you hear sounds very like the fast idle solenoid tripping in and out.:)

I figured the sound comes from advance solenoid at the bottom of the pump, disconnecting a connector which goes to fuel shut off solenoid stops the sound, shut off solenoid is ok.
starting the engine is still _very_ difficult, but sometimes it starts from the first time, even better from cold. Laguna is inhabited by trollies. Does any one have an idea where to buy new advance solenoid? Diesel injection pump BOSCH VE4/11 E2000 R672

Hi Slowgrind - have you checked the temperature control for the solenoid but if you're sure the solenoid if faulty I suggest your best bet is likely to be a diesel specialist:)

hi mister,

I have no idea how to check temperature control for solenoid?
It is controlled by ECU I believe, advance solenoid wires go from the loom which leads to ECU. Something is rotting inside a pump, dead rat perhaps. This particular solenoid has 2 wires, none of them is grounded, so must be some kind of alternating signal from ECU. Diesel specialists say lets take pump off and test it, rotten rotor head etc, they are on look out for a fat rabbit like me. I will try to read an error code somehow though.
