I love my laguna I really do, but the problems I have with it are truly shocking! the latest one is that the sensor that stops the car from being started when in gear now only lets you start the car with the clutch pedal depressed! Anyone got any ideas what is the problem is? I don't want it failing all together and immobilising the car!

I think you need a new reverse light switch it has two jobs one for the reverse lights and second tells the car if it is in gear.

It won't completely immobilise the car.
As the other replys say it's likely to be the switch on the gear box. Have your reverse lights also failed?
Could be worse. When mine failed 5 years ago it caused the parking distance sensors to fail to activate on reverse causing the Mrs to back into a wall!
It's an easy job (if you ignore the problems getting the engine undertray off and back on).
I also think you have the J5R gear box that will need to be drained and re-filled. On this box you just re-fill until the oil starts to overflow from the fill hole.
(the PK6 box is much more difficult to fill)
