I have recently purchased a 2nd hand laguna. 2003 1.8 petrol. She has failed mot twice on the emissions. Co level is too high. I have replaced the cat and the 2nd lambda sensor. But still no joy. The plugs and coil packs have already been replaced and from what i can see the head gasket has been repaired/replaced within the last year. Any other things i can try

Try replacing the upstream lambda (the one in the exhaust manifold). This is the one that actually controls the fuel ratio. The down stream sensor just measures the output from the cat.

Agree with above post. When my Laguna emissions went poop it was the sensor in the exhaust manifold, its a real PITA one to do i'm afraid. :(
