hi

a while back my laguna 2002 1.9dci started running bad, hesitant when cruising (ok when accelerating), lots of black smoke and a whooshing noise from the front. had a look at the car and the intercooler is swollen, instead of being flat along the top it has a considerably arch, about an inch and a half heigh at the center. when quickly pressing the accelerator hard; the intercooler swells more, then as the revs reduce the intercooler drops back to its "normal" swollen size and a shreek can be heard.

obviously i need to replace the intercooler but i feel this is more a symptom of the problem not the actual cause, i've searched through the forum but haven't found the same problem, similar problems seem to indicate the ERG(?) valve needs cleaning.

a couple of questions;

1. does anyone know what's wrong
2. what could cause the intercooler to swell like this
3. should i have the GRE valve cleaned

any other advice offered would be appreciated.

thanks
Lee

p.s. does anybody know if an intercooler from an 1.9dci laguna 2002 estate would fit mine, the difference is that mines not an estate.

The earlier intercoolers are known to be problematic. The laters ones had strapping around them to stop this exact problem.

An estate intercooler will fit, just check it has the straps around it.

Its always worth cleaning the EGR valve.

Be warned you should treat this urgently as it is a potentially very serious and expensive problem that can in the worst cases require a new engine!

Whatever you do have the turbo checked symtoms are simlar to mine before my turbo blew, and it blows the cat and its been a nightmare cost me a grand up to now.

When the EGR valve is removed, directly above that is where the airhose connects, remove that and unbolt the black plastic thing it connects to (dont know its proper name) just inside there is a hole that goes down to the egr vavle. Mine was so clogged the hole was almost non existant. Make sure its cleaned.

as an update; changed the intercooler this evening and cleaned the EGR valve, the valve was actually rather clean, i was very surprised, the EGR valve had dry black "soot" on it but my mate (mechanic) said it was probably the cleanest he's ever seen. anyway the car runs great, better than ever, very relieved, i'll check the hoses and turbo over the next few days and report back anything of interest. so far so good.

big thanks to everyone that has contributed.

Intercooler woes

Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I know this is an old post but I didn't want to start another thread about the same issue.

I recently bought a Laguna DCi Expression (03 plate), and from day one it sufferred from surging, and lots of smoke from the exhaust. I took it to a Renault dealer today and they told me that the Intercooler is falling apart. With any luck once the Intercooler is replaced my car should be back to normal. What i wanted to know is, will Renault check the Turbo as matter of course when replacing the Intercooler?

The only way to be sure about the turbo is to have a specialist check it out, or better still get an overhaul, from a company such as turbo technics. TT will overhaul the turbo - replace seals and check bearings - for 200 notes but it takes several days and you have to get the thing out, to them, and back again so labour could add up if you can't do it yourself.

Are you still getting any odd noises, like a whistling while revving the engine, this is a sign of a turbo problem.
